Public impact data

Foodbanks are climate infrastructure nobody counts.

Four sections, four citable arguments. The size of the gap, the urgency of the regulatory clock, and the contribution capacity this platform funds. Every figure derived from publicly published Voedselbanken Nederland reports, EU regulatory schedules, and the FRAME-aligned methodology documented in Methodology.

01

The poverty gap. One million Dutch people live in poverty. The foodbanks reach 14%.

86% of Dutch people in poverty are not reached by a foodbank. The gap is invisible in any official report. See the gemeente-level map →

A decade of pressure. The 2024 numbers fell 20%. The need did not.

VBN's own Onder de Radar project finds only 4–16% of eligible people apply. Headline numbers fall; underlying need does not.

03

The CSRD wave. ~7,000 NL mid-cap corporates need a verified climate disclosure.

  1. 2024

Wave 1: large EU public-interest entities file first ESRS reports

    200 NL companies

  2. We are here

    2025

Limited assurance begins for Wave 1 disclosures

    200 NL companies

  3. 2027

Wave 2 (post-Omnibus delay): companies >250 employees in scope

    7.000 NL companies

  4. 2029

Wave 3: listed SMEs file under proportionate standard

    1.500 NL companies

Wave-2 timing was delayed by the EU's February 2025 Omnibus proposal, but the obligation is in scope and assurance is coming. The auditor-defensible infrastructure to disclose ESRS E5 + S3 climate contribution does not yet exist in non-energy sectors. CSR teams reach for half-defensible carbon credits and offset narratives; auditors push back. Kavel fills that gap with measured, attributable climate-contribution disclosures.

04

The contribution-capacity gap. 75,000 tonnes of CO₂e of climate contribution sits unattributed every year.

Climate-contribution capacity per year

Currently attributed on a corporate disclosure

Dutch food waste produces ~7 million tCO₂e per year. Foodbank rescue currently mitigates roughly 1.07% of it. None of that mitigation shows up anywhere in the climate-contribution economy — that is the wedge.
